Chevron Crazy

So, I am a little obsessed with the chevron pattern right now and plan on incorporating it into my classroom decorations. I inherited a stool and decided to give it a make-over (with chevrons of course). It took me a few days to do, but I love how it turned out! My first little project of the summer for my room!

First I sanded down the stool, which was covered in students' signatures. Then I painted it the base color.

After that I used painters tape and made a checkerboard pattern, so that I knew my chevrons would be even. Then with the help of my uncle, we used a razor blade to cut out the sections of tape we didn't need in order to make the chevrons.

Finally, I painted three coats of the purple right over the tape. I waited an hour or two after each coat just to avoid it getting sticky or gummy. I let it dry after the third coat for 24 hours before removing the tape and I am in love with the final product!
I decided that my next project will be two book shelves that need a little paint job. To save time, I think I am going to paint them and then use cute contact paper on the shelves to spice them up a little- it should be way less work than the stool! Any suggestions or ideas for a cute DIY bookshelf!?
